{"id":19291,"date":"2021-08-10T12:06:01","date_gmt":"2021-08-10T10:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oiebulletin.fr\/?p=19291"},"modified":"2021-09-30T07:45:05","modified_gmt":"2021-09-30T05:45:05","slug":"the-third-oie-animal-welfare-global-forum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bulletin.woah.org\/?p=19291&lang=es","title":{"rendered":"The third OIE Animal Welfare Global Forum"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><em><span style=\"color: #666699; font-size: 18pt;\">Animal welfare and the UN Sustainable Development Goals<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Paris, France, 26 and 28 April, and 4 May 2021 (Virtual)<\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #000000;\">The third OIE Animal Welfare Global Forum explored whether improvements in animal welfare can contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oie.int\/en\/what-we-do\/animal-health-and-welfare\/animal-welfare\/communication-with-stakeholders\/\">OIE Animal Welfare Global Forum<\/a>, a key activity of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oie.int\/en\/what-we-do\/animal-health-and-welfare\/animal-welfare\/#ui-id-2\">OIE Global Animal Welfare Strategy (GAWS)<\/a>, aims to bring together representatives from the global animal welfare community to foster dialogue on challenging animal welfare topics.<\/p>\n<p>The internationally adopted <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/\">United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/a> envision a future in 2030 without poverty and hunger and protected from the worst effects of climate change and loss of biodiversity. Despite the SDGs having a broad scope, any reference to the contribution of domesticated animals, wild animals, and aquatic animals is limited, and animal welfare is not mentioned at all.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that one of the objectives of the OIE Seventh Strategic Plan (2021\u20132025) is to contribute to achieving the SDGs, this year\u2019s OIE Forum, entitled, \u2018Animal welfare and the UN Sustainable Development Goals\u2019, opened up a dialogue on the role of animals, their health and welfare in achieving these goals. Organised in collaboration with the Swedish Agricultural University (SLU), the OIE Forum explored whether improvements in animal welfare can contribute to the achievement of the SDGs and vice versa. A key part of the Forum measured how participants viewed the relationship between animal welfare and each of the SDGs using a semi-quantitative scoring system, along with qualitative comments. The methodology used had been developed by the SLU in a previous forum.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oie.int\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/report-3rd-oie-animal-welfare-global-forum.pdf\">programme<\/a> (available on the OIE website), included a welcome address from OIE Director General, Dr Monique \u00c9loit, and several presentations to immerse participants in the topic, including break out group sessions. Divided into small groups, participants were asked to score the link between animal welfare and the SDGs and vice versa, individually and then as a group, &nbsp;and to discuss the rationales for their scores.&nbsp; Prof. Linda Keeling from SLU presented the preliminary results of the exercise.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #666699;\">Overall, the scoring indicated a strong positive impact on animal welfare in achieving SDGs and a positive impact on the SDGs in improving animal welfare, in four of the SDGs: 3. \u2018Good health and wellbeing\u2019, 12. \u2018Responsible consumption and production\u2019, 14. \u2018Life below water\u2019 and 15. \u2018Life on land\u2019.
