Volcanoes National Park expansion programme: benefits for mountain gorillas and human livelihoods

Conflict between humans, wildlife and disease are the major threats faced by great apes in East and Central Africa. Ecological restoration and the expansion of critical ecological niches are essential for wildlife species conservation and protection.

The Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is being expanded for the benefit of both mountain gorillas and the community, to aid in ecological restoration and to minimise human−wildlife conflict. Good conservation actions have led to the growth of mountain gorilla populations. At the same time, their habitat has remained the same size.

For this reason, a park expansion programme to increase the habitat for the mountain gorillas is being undertaken by the Rwandan government and partners. It is expected that this will be of great benefit to the mountain gorilla population, as well as improving the livelihoods of surrounding communities.
