WOAH’s role in wildlife disease data collection

Wildlife disease monitoring and reporting is essential for conserving biodiversity, as well as for safeguarding domestic animals and public health. The activities being taken under the 2020 Wildlife Health Framework will clarify WOAH’s role in data collection for all wildlife diseases, as well as making it more effective. Currently, WAHIS, the WOAH global reference platform for validated official data, only collects information on listed diseases (Figure 1) and does not capture data on other important diseases of wildlife.
